Santo Domingo.- An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale occurred on Saturday night in northwestern Haiti and was felt in much of the Dominican Republic, confirmed the National Seismology Center of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo .
According to preliminary reports, in the national territory the tremor was felt most strongly in Montecristi, Dajabón, Santiago Rodríguez, Valverde, Santiago, Puerto Plata, La Vega, Monseñor Nouel and in some sectors of the National District.
The earthquake occurred at 8:15 at night about 145 kilometers north / northwest of Montecristi and 23 kilometers northwest of Tort de Taix and northwest of Port de Paix, Haiti. At the time of closing there were no reports of damages or victims in Haiti.
In Hato del Medio, Guayubín, in Montecristi, Professor Ramona Rodríguez confirmed that the tremor was felt more intensely than previous ones.
The national deputy director of Civil Defense in Santiago, Francisco Arias, reported that last night at 9:30 he had not received reports of damages or injured people in the Northwest Line and the Cibao.
Arias said that residents in Dajabón, Montecristi, Santiago Rodriguez, Mao, La Vega, Puerto Plata, Bonao, Villa Rivas, Sosua, and this city, have been calling that relief agency in relation to the earthquake.
He also explained that he keeps in touch with his colleagues in Civil Defense in the aforementioned communities.
