Preventive prisoners report sleeping “one on top of the other” on the SPM prison floor

SAN PEDRO DE MACORIS. The prisoners of the preventive prison of the Palace of Justice of this city denounced the overcrowding and overpopulation in which they coexist and asked for their transfers to safer prisons

They said that they are living a humanitarian drama, given the high temperatures, the lack of space and water.

The inmates sent photos to social networks, where they are seen sleeping in hammocks and on the floor stacked like sardines, one on top of the other.

They qualified as a hell two of the four cells that are in the preventive jail and said that their stay in them is one of the most severe punishments, because they can not receive the sun’s rays.

In the same way, they assured that there is a cell where the important prisoners have even air conditioning and receive privileges obtained through the supposed payment of tolls.

“Here the body is marshmallow, given the heat and we have to sleep up to six men on the floor of the bathroom,” said an inmate who requested anonymity for fear of reprisals.

They also denounced that in order for their families to see them, they have to pay money to an alleged victim.

Pedro Núñez, fiscal attorney of San Pedro de Macorís, told Diario Libre that the overpopulation is due to the fact that model jails are not receiving more prisoners, to avoid overpopulation.

However, he noted that as a result of the visit of the Attorney General of the Republic, Jean Rodríguez, things have improved and the preventive jail is being continually decongesting
